After years of intense international activity as a performer - on stage, in recording studios and in masterclasses - Cristo Barrios has gradually moved into a role of artistic reflection, research and teaching. This evolution has not meant withdrawing from performance, but rather enriching it with a deeper commitment to teaching and musical philosophy.
Together with Dr Víctor Durà-Vilà, a philosopher at the University of Leeds, Cristo has developed an ambitious pedagogical project aimed at Masters students - instrumentalists and singers alike - who wish to deepen their interpretive practice beyond technical mastery. The project combines artistic and intellectual development, guiding students through a rigorous exploration of musical meaning, historical context and emotional expression.
At the heart of this work is a commitment to:
➤ Innovative pedagogy, where theory and practice inform each other to develop mature, original and reflective musicians.
➤ Interpretive depth, rooted in close engagement with the score, the composer's intentions, and the cultural and emotional significance of the work.
➤ Collaborative learning environments that are emotionally and intellectually stimulating.
➤ Long-term artistic development, encouraging students to cultivate a personal voice based on responsibility and artistic integrity.
Cristo's doctoral research on the limits of interpretive freedom - developed at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid serves as the theoretical backbone of this approach. Rather than proposing fixed rules, their method offers tools to empower students to make thoughtful, meaningful interpretative choices.
This pedagogical initiative has been successfully implemented at institutions such as the Centro Superior Katarina Gurska in Madrid and has recently been invited to the Liszt Academy in Budapest. It reflects Cristo's conviction that education is not separate from artistry, but one of its highest and most enduring forms.
